Exactly what is a “blog”? A blog, derived from “weblog”, is basically an online journal where you can digitally put down your ideas, thoughts, opinions and practically anything that you want people to read.

There are no rules in blogging and it’s becoming more and more the choice of platform for compiling information to use for one’s personal agenda as well as business. Bloggers have the freedom to express themselves however they want, and the best thing about blogging, is that most blogging sites are free.

I will say however, if you are using a blog for business, you will want to use your own hosted account such as wordpress.org, not wordpress.com.  The difference?  Ok.  With wordpress.com, WordPress is hosting your blog free of charge for you.  And, they have control over whether it stays or is deleted.  You don’t want someone from WordPress having a bad day and seeing something they didn’t like on your site…. like something business related, and delete your account.

By paying for your own hosting fees, you can install a free WordPress blog template to your domain name and now only YOU  have control.  There’s great peace of mind in paying a small yearly hosting fee to give you total access and control over your blog.

Blogs come in all different styles, formats and settings, depending on your preference. Many blogging sites, offer built in features such as hyperlinks, pictures, mp3’s, videos, etc. Some bloggers choose to make their blogs more audio friendly, by using spoken word entries. This is called audio blogging. There are also video logs.

When you first install a blog template, it will have some basic features that are pretty standard.

archive- list of older articles
title- where you label your post,
body- the content of your post,
blogroll- other sites can be linked back to your blog,
comments- this allow readers to post comments on your blog.

From there, it’s up to you to add on features or “plug ins”.  So, if you want to add a plugin that allows you to optimize your blog for SEO (search engine optimization), meaning the search engines can pick up your content, you will want to install the plugin (or add on feature) called “All in One SEO pack”.  And you can find a list of these through a search feature when you log into your work area for your blog.  Super simple.

If you want to add a translator so people that speak other languages can translate your blog into their language, you can add that plugin.  The sky’s the limit as to what you can add on to make your blog look how you want it.

Unlike other websites that are made up of numerous individual pages, blogs are usually made up of only a few templates making it easier for blog users to create new pages.
