7 Tips to Ensure Your
Business Day Will Be Productive
We all want productive business days.
Don’t we love it when we can jump out of bed in the morning with a well thought out plan of attack to get everything done we need to for the day?
We sail through the “to do list” and accomplish all of the things that needed to get done. At the end of the day when we lay our head on the pillow and reflect on our productivity, we can pat ourselves on the back and say “well done”.
This sounds easy enough if we have a job because the daily activities, the routine, the habits, the time it takes to complete a task, is generally already set. It’s the ‘norm’. We’re used to it. There’s typically a lot of structure in a job and therefore it’s much easier to stay focused and get done what we have to get done.
But what about your home business?
Can you get to the end of day and feel the same way about your accomplishments?
If you’re like most, the answer is no. So how can you turn that around?
Here’s 7 Tips to Ensure Your Business Day Will Be Productive
1) Plan your day the night before.
Make a list of to-do’s. On your list should include all the basics that keep your home based business a success:
- Reading and listening to audio on topics of personal growth and success.
- Creating your marketing pieces, i.e. blogs, articles, videos, etc
- Syndicating that marketing, i.e. running ads, social media platforms, email your list and send them your content.
- Interact with prospects on the social media sites.
- Respond to email, text and phone messages.
- Touch base with new team members.
And, any other daily productivity task important to your business.
Get into a routine just like you do at the office. You’re the boss of your business it’s this entrepreneurial endeavor that’s going to give you the life you want. So have a well planned goal for getting your daily work done and outsourcing some of these tasks as soon as you can.
When you wake up in the morning without a plan, it’s easy to get distracted and you’ll find yourself floundering around spending too much time figuring out what you need to do. With no direction, before you know it, the day will get away from you. Don’t put yourself in that position. Learn how to manage yourself.
Bonus to planning your day the night before: you’ll sleep much better when you put on paper what you need to accomplish the following day. Getting your brain emptied of the things you don’t want to forget to do is priceless. It gives your mind all night to be working on accomplishing those tasks subconsciously.
2) Watch your thoughts before you sleep.
Make the last thing you think about before falling asleep, positive, productive thoughts. Visualize how good you will feel tomorrow night when you moved your business forward and what that will mean for your family, your lifestyle. I call this dreamscaping. The work you do is toward an end goal of the lifestyle you want. Imagine how that feels… to already have success… and you are living the life you want. These thoughts till continue to work for you for 4 hours after you actually go to sleep.
This will help set the stage for a great day.
3) Morning affirmations and thoughts.
When you wake up, the moment you are conscious, put positive thoughts and affirmations in your mind and let them be the first words out of your mouth in the morning.
“It’s going to be a great day.”
“I’m going to accomplish everything on my list.”
“I will handle any situation with positive solutions.”
“I am grateful to have the opportunity to succeed.”
“I will be focused on my tasks and stay organized.”
Set your expectations for a good day.
4) Decide Ahead of Time How To Handle Challenges
When situations come up that are challenging, make a conscious decision that you will keep your emotions in tack and immediately go into solution mode.
Entrepreneurs are solution oriented.
Employees are problem dwellers.
You have to think like the boss. The boss doesn’t fall apart. The boss asks the questions, “how can I?” and then finds a solution.
This is exactly where all the the personal development will come in handy. You see, personal development teaches you how to grow up as an entrepreneur and how to respond to challenges and difficulties. You didn’t learn this stuff in school growing up. In school, you were taught things you needed to be successful in a job, working for someone else, and expecting your boss to solve problems.
Entrepreneurship is a different game and it takes a different mindset. This is where the rubber meets the road and measure your growth as a home base business owner.
Decide ahead of time that no matter what, the day will be great, you can, and will, overcome and victory in all circumstances belongs to you.
5) Remove Distractions
This picture is great if you’re just playing around on the computer while the kids are jumping around and playing, but it’s not a productive working situation.
‘It’s one thing to have your ‘to do’ list and be committed to checking things off, it’s quit another to have distractions where your constantly side tracked. This is especially important if you only have a couple hours each night to work on your business because you’re still doing the 9-5 grind.
Here’s some recommendations.
Let the family know this is your time to work and to not interrupt
- Turn your phone off
- Turn skype off
- Turn any gadget off that gives you notifications
- Turn email off
- Turn on music that you work best in
- Have the area around you clean and tidy.
- Grab your favorite beverage if that helps you. Often for me, it’s a cup of tea.
When I recommend you tell the family to not disturb, this includes kids running up and down the hallway, their music blaring and the TV blasting in the other room. Make sure you get good family time in, schedule outings, eat dinner together and be at their school and sports activities, but when it’s your time to work, there needs to be respect in the home for what you’re doing.
If you have small children still at home, perhaps a babysitter for a couple hours a day is just what the doctor ordered. If they are school aged, you should be able to accomplish your list of to-do’s during school hours so you can be a full time mom and dad when the kids walk through the door in the afternoon. (The joys of lifestyle living).
Celebrate by saying, “YES! I am getting stuff done!” with everything you cross off your list.
There’s nothing quite like being able to check something off a list. If you do the most difficult task first, you’ll fly faster through your list. But do acknowledge to yourself that you are making progress.
Do the task you dislike the most at the beginning of your day or working session and watch the rest of of the list fly by.
Have you ever had a task you thought about all day simply because you didn’t want to do it? Procrastination can drain you and steal your creativity and energy. Don’t do that to yourself. Enjoy each day by getting done the stuff that will bug you if you don’t.
If you have projects you’re working on plus maintaining your daily schedule, it can be overwhelming. Look and see what can be outsourced.
You’ll find places like Fiverr.com where you can find someone who will do things for you for $5.
They can do image creatives, write blogs and articles, transcribe your video, syndicate your content, do keyword research, the list goes on.
Other places you want to look are
Search Twitter feeds for Virtual Assistants.
There’s no reason that you have to be a one man show. You wouldn’t do that if you opened a brick and mortar. You’d have employees to help you. In your home based business, you can have people help you as well.
