7 Steps to Getting Results You Want

Ever since I can remember, anytime I wanted to do something, I asked someone or myself, "How Can I?"

I don't ever remember making excuses for why I can't do something.

After asking the question, "How can I?", there were always answers and solutions.   Sometimes the answer and solution was simple.  Other times there were steps involved.

When I found myself in a devastated real estate practice back in 2007, I asked myself a question.

"How can I replace my real estate income but doing so by using just my laptop from the comfort of my home or any location I choose?"

After research and making a few mistakes (which are inevitable), I found the answers and solution for me.  It would be to start a home based business.  Since then, I've never punched a clock or reported to a boss.

Was it always easy?  Heck no!

Was it worth it?  For me, absolutely!

I'd like to share the 7 steps I took to get the results I wanted and how you can too.

Step 1:  Decide what kind of entrepreneurship You Want

There are many ways of creating income from home using just your laptop.  You've got choices such as:

  • Creating your own product. (Info products, "how to" products, coaching services, etc.)
  • Joining a Network Marketing or MLM Company.
  • Aligning with a direct sales company
  • Marketing affiliate products (everything from tools and resources to products and services).
  • Selling stuff garage sale or auction style (Ebay, Etsy, Craigs List)
  • Any combination of the above.

Think about whether you want to take on the creative burden or just market something that others have already created.

Step 2:  Choose the company you wish to affiliate with

After you have decided on your method of entrepreneurship, you will now want to select a company to align yourself with.  Things to take into consideration are:

  • Demand for product/service

  • Policies and Procedures as to whether or not you are captive to that company alone.  Many companies will not allow you to market anything else if you are affiliated with them.  Depending on your beliefs and business model regarding multiple streams of income, this will be a critical piece of information to have prior to making a decision.

  • What is your compensation.  In the old days, you only had choices for small commissions.  In today's businesses, you can make significant residual incomes as well as receiving 70-100% commissions.

Note:  It's just as easy to market a high ticket product or service as it is for the nickle and dime stuff.  Make sure the income you are signing up for is enough for you to accomplish your goals and dreams.  So many people overlook this part.  They are caught up in the emotion of the product or service that they default to acceptance on their pay.  Bad move.  Just be aware.  After all, the reason you are starting a home based business is to make money… so, depending on how much effort to pay reward is in place will make a difference!

Step 3:  Become a student that implements

Study role models, leaders, mentors and others who have gone before you in your industry and see what they did to achieve success.  Don't catch yourself being a professional student.  I wrote a blog  called 3 Tips to Help You be a Implementer.  You may gleam a gold nugget or two there if that's an area you struggle with.

Step 4:  Choose Your Method Of Advertising

There are 101 ways to market.  They all work, but not all work for all entrepreneurs.  Sounds weird I know.  But here's the variables.  It has to do with your personal gifts, talents, interests, advertising budget and willingness to focus on a particular thing until you get it figured out.  Here's a short list of the most popular types of advertising.

  • video
  • blogging
  • articles
  • press releases
  • solo ads
  • banner ads
  • classifieds both online and offline
  • direct mail
  • magazine ads
  • social media
  • pay per click through google, bing, yahoo and other search engines
  • pay per view
  • pop over and under ads

You will find what works for you.  This is where many people get stuck.  They don't take action on their marketing.  They'll learn some things but then not implement.  Or, they'll implement and give up after they get no results.

You would never run a brick and mortar business like that… you would continue to advertise to bring customers through your door.  Treat your home business like a business and it will pay you as such.

Step 5:  Forget about the money

Now… I know this really sounds oximoron…but here me out.

Most people decide to join a home based business because they are in crisis.  They need money and need it now.  Their home is ready to go into foreclosure, bankruptcy is on the horizon, they can't make their car payment and so what do they do?

They turn to these "online marketing magic ads" that tell them they can get rich overnight and somehow, they place their hopes in that.

There's no free ride.

Building a business is hard work in that there is a learning curve, you have to put on an entrepreneur hat and take off the employee hat which requires personal development and growth.  It requires YOU to become a successful person inside before you can have success outwardly and that doesn't happen overnight.

Does that mean you can't make money along the way?  No, of course not.  This is why having a home based business is so awesome!  You can earn while you learn and build as you development.

When you start a home based business, you want to be coming from servant heart leadership.  This means you are focusing on the other person.  Your customer.  Your business partner.

You're helping people solve their problems, whether that's through a product, a service, a tool and resources… and you are paid for that.

When you focus on making the sale for the money because you are desperate, that will show through and you'll sabotage.  When you can forget about yourself, your own desires, and your own gain and focus on helping the people coming through your business door, the money follows.

Step 6:  Make and Implement your Plan

At this point… you have

  1. Decided to start a business
  2. Chosen your entrepreneurial path
  3. Decided on the company you will align yourself with
  4. Chosen a method to market your product/service
  5. Understand it's about serving your customers

And now, you will take a pen to paper and write out your business plan.

  • Decide the days and times you will work.
  • Schedule your personal development time.
  • Schedule your study time
  • Schedule your income producing activities
  • Write and know your clear goals and objectives

This is your road map of how to get to where you want to go.

Step 7:  Implement and Tweak As You Go

This is simple enough yet the hardest thing people struggle with.  You've got to open your business.  You've got to get started.

People often want to wait until the time is right.  The time will never be right.  It's all 'on the job' training.

People want to procrastinate… This is just fear.  Put fear aside and get going.  You have one chance to make the most of your life.  Live it to the fullest and learn to laugh at yourself.

You will make mistakes along the way.  This is how you learn.  Your mistakes are not failures, but only  temporary defeats.  They are not permanent.  As a professional entrepreneur and business person, you will tweak and change plans along the way.

Summary

The process is really streamlined.  It's not difficult.  There is some thought and planning about the matter, but it's more about getting started and deciding that no matter what, you will not give up or quit.  It's easy to quit.  Anyone can quit.  That's the easy way out, yet it leads to a life of misery, struggle, living 'less than' and dying having not lived your purpose.

Napoleon Hill said in "Think and Grow Rich", the following:

No man is ever whipped until he quits.

We see men who have accumulated great fortunes, but we often recognize only their triumph, overlooking the temporary defeats which they had to surmount before "arriving".

No follower of this philosophy can reasonably expect to accumulate a fortune without experiencing 'temporary defeat.'  When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuilt those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.  If you give up before your goals has been reached, you are a 'quitter'.  A quitter never wins— and a winner never quits.  Lift this sentence out and write it on a piece of paper in letters an inch high, and place it where you will see it every night before you go to sleep and every morning before you go to to work.

I hope this helps you see the overall big picture in a way that's not that big of a deal.  Don't allow fears and insecurities to stop you.  If you want success bad enough… if you want a different lifestyle bad enough… you will do whatever it takes.  Sometimes that means starting reading books on how to overcome and go from there.

In closing, I want you to know that I believe in you.  You deserve the best life you can live and you deserve all good things and abundance.  Dream your dreams and put together an action plan to accomplish that.

Leave your comments as I always love hearing from you, and hearing your thoughts and ideas and opinions.  Have a blessed day!
