3 Expectations When Starting Your Home Business

The year was 2007 and I was on fire for my new home based business.  I had just traded in my 13 year real estate career paying a sweet 6 figure income and was ready to tackle this home based business stuff.

I remember tossing my high heels in the closet for the last time, hanging up my dress suit, pushing aside my make up, and putting on comfy shorts and T’s, swooping my hair back in a pony tail and it was one of the happiest days of my life.

I was starting on a freedom venture where I could rule my own life, my time and income.

While I had a mentor showing me the way, there were a few things he didn’t mention.

Looking back, I wish he’d have had the “talk” with me about my expectations.

Here’s were the sugar plums dancing in my head…. ready?

adult-1868750_640Everyone will buy from me, like me, resonate with me, and anyone who joined my home based business gig would be just as excited and committed as I was.

Now, maybe you’re smarter than I was at the time and if that’s the case, when you get up off the floor from laughing, you can finish reading my article.

LOL. I know, it’s hilarious that I thought that!  What was I thinking!

But let me ask you, if truth be told, are you thinking that any of that may be your expectations as well?

Here are 3 expectations when starting your home based business that will make you a happier, more well adjusted entrepreneur.

1) Not Everyone Will Buy And/Or Join You

When I decided on what product to offer and market in my business, it was one that I was thoroughly passionate about.   I didn’t conceive that other people would not be just as passionate or excited.  I believed that when anyone saw what I had to offer, they would not be able to contain themselves. They would buy.

Well, that’s not even close to the truth.  The truth is, not everyone will buy.

And because I didn’t have a healthy understanding of “my passion may not be your passion”, I was taking it personally when someone said no.

This created low self-esteem, frustration and lack of confidence.   These ingredients lead to failure and recognizing that at least, I took the matter to my mentor.  He straightened me out and set me back on my path. (Thank God for mentors!)

Not everyone will buy for any number of reasons.

It’s not personal, it’s business.

How many times have you shopped for a TV and didn’t buy?
Or gone into a clothing store and didn’t buy?
Or walked on a car lot and didn’t buy?

Should those store clerks take you not buying as a personal attack?

No.

Your home business is business.  It’s not personal.

People looking to start a home based business are shopping for the right fit for them.

  • Not everyone resonates with your product.
  • Not everyone resonates with your compensation plan.
  • Not everyone resonates with your personality.
  • Not everyone resonates with any number of things.

They are shopping, searching, nosing around, just as you do, let’s be honest.

Your job as a home business entrepreneur is to present your products and services in a professional manner and provide all the information about the opportunity.  Get good at presenting your information, handling objections (which are just questions) and help people make a decision as to whether what you offer is a fit for them.

Your business will not be a fit for everyone.  So, know that and you’ll save yourself a lot of grief.   know I sound like a broken record, but don’t take it personal.

My mentor Jeffrey Combs says, “Some will, some won’t, so what, NEXT.”  Adopt this and you’ll be a happier well balanced home business entrepreneur.

2.  Duplication is a myth.  

I’ve been in the industry since 2007.  I’ve seen teams of all sizes and have been a part of some of them.  I’ve had teams myself up to 450 members.

When I see people touting that “My team is duplicating!”, the truth of the matter is there’s people inside that team who are working but it’s not because of a duplication mystery.

It’s because those individuals have taken responsibility for themselves and are coachable, are happily learning, aggressively implementing and being consistent.

Yes, they may be doing the same type of marketing but they alone are taking action.

It’s amazing what “action” will get you!

What I discovered is people will resonate with YOU. People don’t join business opportunities as much as they join YOU.  They want to do business with those they know, like and trust.

YOU can’t be duplicated.  Your trust factor, your personality, the way you show up, that’s a very DNA blueprint to YOU.

If you join a team based on “hey my team is duplicating” and think that you will automatically get the same results, that’s a myth.  That’s not true. Your results will be based on how you learn and show up in your business as well as your belief system and confidence.

Make sense?  It’s common sense.

Here’s what CAN happen however to help your team.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

  • You can get results and share what you’re doing.
  • You can plug others into the same system and processes you are using.
  • You can share the same books, audios and personal development courses you’re benefiting from with others.
  • You can show up in your business every day to role model.
  • You can encourage others to get to work
  • You can give kicks in the booty to those making excuses

But, unless each individual is willing to put their time, energy and work into their business, they won’t have success.  You can’t do it for them.

In other words, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink.

Thus, duplication is only in franchises.  Not in a home based business because each person is their own brand.

3.  People Will Quit Pretty Darn Fast

I was surprised to find out people would join a business, pay the money and quit. In a few cases, I would call to welcome them and never heard from them!

  • Some quit before they started!
  • Some quit after 1 attempt to do something.
  • Some quit after a couple months from no results.
  • Some quit a year or two later.

People quit.

I grew up with training from great parents that taught me if you want something, go get it.

  • If it’s hard, so what.
  • If you run into challenges, figure it out.
  • If you want to something, do it and make no excuses.
  • Hire a coach, hire help, hire a tutor, whatever was necessary to move myself forward.

But quitting was the easy way out and not accepted in our family.

So seeing people quit so fast and easily was something I was not prepared for and I attached their outcome to myself, as if I was responsible somehow.

My mentor had to explain to me that for every 100 people that joined my home based business, I’d maybe find 2-3 good workers in there.  Wow!

He said it’s just like anything else people do/buy/join.

Exercise equipment and gym memberships that never get used, was a good example.

People spend a lot of money on these things, even diet foods and pills and when they don’t get instant new body, they lose interest.  The equipment goes into the garage, the membership expires and the pills and foods end up in the trash can.

Here’s what to take away from this.  You are not on any level responsible for anyone’s success.  You can offer your help and encouragement all you want but at the end of the day, each person has to take 100% self responsibility.

These are great expectations to share with your new team members early on.  Don’t let them run into the issues I did and have them believe that it’s their fault someone didn’t join their business, or that they didn’t have success or that they quit.

It takes a strong willed person with big reasons WHY to get through learning curves and little glitches like these to rise to the top and have the life they want.  The good news, is you don’t have to worry about this small fry stuff because now you know.
